Thrifting in September

The Farmington Place Apartments has some of our favorite thrifting tips and tricks to help you shop this September. Thrift stores have the reputation of selling items that are old, out-of-style, and out-of-date, but that’s not true! Thrift stores can be treasure troves of vintage and classic items. Call up a friend and head to your favorite thrift store in Wichita, KS before the month is through.

The most important thing to remember when you’re thrift store shopping is to keep your mind open. Searching through the racks at your local thrift store can be a little disheartening. While there are certainly amazing items waiting to be found, there are plenty of items that will be old, worn down, or downright strange. Don’t dismiss these items. Just think — how can you alter items to make them useful? If something is strange, but you like it, figure out ways to make it work in your apartment home. Also, you’ll never find the gold ticket items — designer shoes, vintage postcards, rare editions of your favorite book — unless you put in the work.

Remember to set a budget. It can be easy to go overboard when you’re thrift store shopping. There’s so much to buy and most of it is pretty cheap. Keep your mind open but also keep your budget (and your space) in mind. Don’t buy anything that will just end up cluttering your apartment before heading back to thrift store as a donation.

Take thrift store shopping as an opportunity to explore the history of the city. Head to antique stores and ask for the history behind items. There are plenty of ways to learn more about Wichita, KS, but we think that learning about your city through the items at your local thrift store is a unique way to learn more about the past.

Do you have any thrift store tips or tricks for us? Let us know in the comments. Thanks for reading our post!

Botanica Wichita

This month the Farmington Place Apartments is featuring one of our favorite places in Wichita, KS — Botanica Wichita. Wichita, KS is home to one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the nation, and there’s nothing like strolling through the gardens on an August morning. We hope that you get the chance to visit these gardens before the month is through.

Gardens

The Botanica Wichita is home to sprawling, lovely gardens like the Woodland Walk, Greenhouse, Martha Parriott Terrace Garden, Peony Collection, and the Shakespeare Garden. Need a place to think? The Shakespeare Garden is perfect for contemplating the big events and decisions in life. “The Shakespearean Garden at Botanica is a beautiful blend of the formal and cottage gardens characteristic of the Elizabethan era. Visitors standing on the upper level of this garden can appreciate the geometric balance of the symmetrical pathways, which lead through the variety of perennial herbs and flowers. Many of the featured plants are mentioned in Shakespeare’s works or were popular in the genteel gardens of his lifetime. A new limestone fountain, symbolic of the Garden’s water source, was installed in 2009. Combined with the teak benches and the Hawthorn trees, this area creates a respite for all who visit Botanica.” You can learn more about the gardens at Botanica Wichita here.

Take a Class

The Botanica Wichita offers classes that anyone can enjoy including photography, Yoga in the Garden, unWINEd, and Lunchtime Lectures. Their photography classes, in particular, seem awesome. These classes let you photograph the Botanica after hours with Kira Morris, a photographer from National Geographic. Their basic class “will accelerate your entry into DSLR photography with a focus on the fundamental skills and concepts you need to take your images to the next level. Whether you’re new to the world of digital photography or looking to brush up on the basics, bring your DSLR and questions to this interactive workshop.” You can read more about their photography classes here and more about other classes at the Botanica Wichita here.

Attend an Event

The Botanica Wichita is home to some of the best events in the city. Follow this link for more information on events coming to the Botanica Wichita in the following weeks and months. We hope that you get the chance to attend one of their fantastic events before the month is through.

Start Your Own Book Club

This month the Farmington Place Apartments has everything you need to start your own book club. Head to your local library in Wichita, KS for a good book, gather your friends, discuss, and have some fun this July! We hope that you’ll find these tips helpful in start your own book club this month.

Tip #1: Use all of your resources

Not sure how to start a book club? Use Goodreads to read and write reviews for your book club and to help you pick which book you’ll read next month. Book of the Month allows you to read reviews, synopses, and excerpts from five books picked by their qualified judges. Want a full on checklist to help you start your book club? Check out this list from Real Simple.

Tip #2: Contact your friends

Invite friends to your book club! Pick a genre and a book and then make a Facebook event. Have group members discuss when (and where) to meet in the Facebook group. Try to a pick a time that works for everyone. Let people make book recommendations and vote on which book to read next month.

Tip #3: Make a snack

No book club is complete without a delicious snack or two (or three). We recommend making this blueberry cheesecake dessert recipe from The Gunny Sack for your next book club snack. This easy treat can be made with graham crackers, melted butter, sugar, cream cheese, eggs, sugar, vanilla, blueberry pie filling, and Cool Whip.

Book Recommendations

Since We Fell by Dennis Lehane

Since We Fell follows Rachel Childs, a former journalist who, after an on-air mental breakdown, now lives as a virtual shut-in. In all other respects, however, she enjoys an ideal life with an ideal husband. Until a chance encounter on a rainy afternoon causes that ideal life to fray. As does Rachel’s marriage. As does Rachel herself. Sucked into a conspiracy thick with deception, violence, and possibly madness, Rachel must find the strength within herself to conquer unimaginable fears and mind-altering truths. By turns heart-breaking, suspenseful, romantic, and sophisticated, Since We Fell is a novel of profound psychological insight and tension. It is Dennis Lehane at his very best.”

Emma by Jane Austen

Beautiful, clever, rich—and single—Emma Woodhouse is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage. Nothing, however, delights her more than interfering in the romantic lives of others. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected. With its imperfect but charming heroine and its witty and subtle exploration of relationships, Emma is often seen as Jane Austen’s most flawless work.”

Road Trip Tips

In this post, the Farmington Place Apartments is featuring road trip routes, snacks, budgeting tips, and more. Get out of your Wichita, KS apartment for an adventure before the month is through. We hope that you get the chance to head out on the road before the month is through!

Destinations

There are plenty of great road trips right here in Kansas. Use Roadtrippers to plan your next road trip. You can plan your route, your stops, your lodging, and more. Roadtrippers even has an excellent guide to road trips in Kansas. So pack up your car and see everything that the state has to offer!

If you’d like to go out of state for your road trip, remember to plan ahead of time. Check the weather, the traffic, and the amount of time you’ll need to take off work before you head out of town. Remember to take note of any interesting sites that might be on your road trip route. Don’t just road trip for the destination — remember to enjoy the journey as well!

Budget

Budget your trip before you go. Make a list of your expected expenses — food, lodging, laundry, gas, souvenirs, etc. — and come up with a reasonable budget. If you would like to go on a more extravagant trip, remember to start saving ahead of time. Set aside a certain amount each month in a “travel fund.” You can save money while you’re on your trip by camping for a couple of days and by packing a cooler full of food. You’ll save money on your lodging and your food budget this way.

Snacks

Healthy road trip snacks include celery, peanut butter, wheat bagels, apples, fruit, and more. Try to replenish your stock of snacks at local grocery stores along your route.

Spring Cleaning Tips

The Farmington Place Apartments Blog has several tips to help you out with your spring cleaning this month. We are featuring tips to help you clean your bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen. We hope that you have a clutter-free month here in Wichita, KS!

Bedroom

Clean out the clutter in your bedroom for your spring cleaning. Get rid of any old books, magazines, movies, and clothes that might be clogging up your closets. Donate your old or unused things to your local thrift store or donation center. Once you’ve cleaned out your room, wipe down the furniture. Vacuum and clean the floors, wash your sheets, dust off your window sills, and make your bed. Your room will feel fresh, clean, and ready for spring!

Bathroom

It’s important to disinfect your bathroom regularly. Scrub the sink, shower, and toilet. Get rid of anything that is old, unused, or expired. Use glass cleaner to get rid of any streaks on your mirrors and scrub away any dirt that may have collected on the floors.

Get Rid of Hard Water Stains

Getting rid of hard water stains can be tough. Maid Brigade® has some advice on cleaning your tub this month. You can use water, vinegar, and baking soda to get rid of hard water stains. Lemon juice is also an effective agent when getting rid of hard water stains.

Kitchen

Clean Your Dishwasher

Your dishwasher deserves to be cleaned, too. Apartment Therapy has an awesome step-by-step guide to cleaning your dishwasher. Run your dishwasher through and then clean it out with baking soda, white vinegar, and lemon juice.

Clean Your Sink

Disinfect your sink this month. Use sea salt, dishwashing soap, white vinegar, baking soda, lemon, and ice to get your sink sparkling! Apartment Therapy can let you know just how to get your sink cleaning started.

Clean Your Fridge

Clean out your fridge this month. Get rid of expired food and organize any food left in your fridge. Wipe down and disinfect your fridge’s shelves and drawers. Dust off your fridge and organize (and clear out) your magnets.

Do you have any spring cleaning tips for us? Let us know in the comments. Thanks for reading our post!

Movies This Month

The Farmington Place Apartments has a few tips to help you throw your next movie marathon. We have the snacks, decorations, and movies suggestions for you to have an awesome movie night. We hope that you enjoy our post!

Snacks

Muddy Buddy Popcorn from Taste and Tell

This muddy buddy popcorn combines two of our favorite movie snacks into one. Use peanut butter, chocolate, popcorn, and powdered sugar to make this treat. Be sure to make plenty — it’ll go fast.

Deep Dish Pizza Casserole from Tbsp.

This deep dish pizza casserole is delicious, cheesy, and extremely easy to throw together. Make your own garlic butter sauce and pair this pizza with celery sticks and chips. This is the perfect dish to serve a big group of friends.

Decorations

Decorate your Farmington Place apartment with movie posters, movie props, and more for your movie marathon. If you’re watching a particular movie series, have your guests dress up as characters from the movie. Having a classic movie night? Roll out the red carpet. There are plenty of ways to make your movie night look (and feel) special.

Movie Recommendations

Casablanca (1942)

From Roger Ebert: “Seeing the film over and over again, year after year, I find it never grows over-familiar. It plays like a favorite musical album; the more I know it, the more I like it. The black-and-white cinematography has not aged as color would. The dialogue is so spare and cynical it has not grown old-fashioned. Much of the emotional effect of “Casablanca” is achieved by indirection; as we leave the theater, we are absolutely convinced that the only thing keeping the world from going crazy is that the problems of three little people do after all amount to more than a hill of beans.”

La La Land (2016)

From The New York Times: “The real tension in “La La Land” is between ambition and love, and perhaps the most up-to-date thing about it is the way it explores that ancient conflict. A cynical but not inaccurate way to put this would be to describe it as a careerist movie about careerism. But that would be to slight Mr. Chazelle’s real and uncomfortable insight, which is that the drive for professional success is, for young people at the present time, both more realistic and more romantic than the pursuit of boy-meets-girl happily-ever-after. Love is contingent. Art is commitment.”

Look on the Brightside Day

December 21st is Look on the Brightside Day. This month the Farmington Place Apartments have a few tips to help you unlock your inner optimist. We hope that the tips we include in this post help you have a sunnier outlook this month, no matter how cloudy the sky is.

Think of a few of the things you are grateful for first thing in the morning. Try to start your days with gratitude by briefly listing what you’re grateful for before your day begins. You can write down the things you are grateful for in a gratitude diary, tell someone else what you’re grateful for, tweet about your gratitude, or just think about all the good things in your life each morning during breakfast. This is an easy way to make life seem brighter. If you’re thinking of the good in life, you don’t have time to focus on the things that might make you feel pessimistic.

Listen to a feel good playlist. Putting together a list of happy songs can make you feel happier and brighter on a bad day. We recommend putting classics by Stevie Wonder (“Signed, Sealed, Delivered”), Hall & Oates (“You Make My Dreams Come True”), and the Beatles (“Here Comes the Sun”) on this playlist.

Clean up your schedule. A big part of being happier and feeling sunnier about life is being better at carving out time for the things you love. Spend a few minutes each week mapping out exactly what you have to do and how much time you think each activity will take. Of course, emergencies will always pop up, but by knowing where all your time has to go, you’ll know where you have free time to dedicate to the things you love.

Try something new. Sometimes brightening your mood is as easy as stepping outside of yourself to try a new hobby like cooking, painting, or gardening. Oftentimes local universities offer community education classes. We have the list of community classes offered at Wichita State University here.

What are your best tips for Look on the Brightside Day? Leave us your best advice in the comments section. Thanks for reading!

Hot Chocolate

In this post, the Farmington Place Apartments Blog is featuring five hot chocolate recipes to help you celebrate the cool weather. Sometimes the changing weather — cloudy skies, falling leaves, a slight bite in the air — can bring the blues. Settle in with a cup of hot chocolate and a good movie for a fall that is full of sweet warmth and new memories. We hope you enjoy.

Caramel Hot Chocolate from Cooking Classy

Nothing says “fall” quite like caramel. Caramel hot chocolate is pretty typical and pretty easy to find (you can find it at Starbucks if you’re not quite up to making your own), but this recipe is just unique and rich enough to top our list. We know you’ll enjoy cuddling up with a good movie and a cup of this hot chocolate this fall.

Crock Pot Pumpkin Spice White Hot Chocolate from A Night Owl

This simple recipe will have pumpkin spice lovers singing. It’s fall which means that pumpkin everything is in vogue. You’ll love the bite that the pumpkin spice creamer gives this unusual (and easy) recipe.

Cheesecake Hot Chocolate from Chocolate Moosey

The cream cheese added to this cheesecake hot chocolate makes for an incredibly (almost unbelievably) thick and creamy drink. The white chocolate gives this recipe a subtle and sweet flavor that you’ll enjoy all fall and winter.

Hot Chocolate Floats from Sugar Hero

This might just be the perfect cold weather dessert. The ice cream melting in the hot chocolate is an unexpected shock of cool sweetness. You’ll love having this dessert after a full and filling winter meal. Add even more chocolate if the melting ice cream dilutes the hot chocolate more that you would like.

Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate Recipe from Crunchy Creamy Sweet

If you love peanut butter cups, you’ll love this peanut butter hot chocolate. It’s the perfect blend of peanut butter, milk, and chocolate. Crunchy Creamy Sweet substitutes sugar with Sweet ‘N Low, but feel free to use sugar if you’d prefer.

Thrifting in September

Botanica Wichita

This month the Farmington Place Apartments is featuring one of our favorite places in Wichita, KS — Botanica Wichita. Wichita, KS is home to one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the nation, and there’s nothing like strolling through the gardens on an August morning. We hope that you get the chance to visit these gardens before the month is through.

The Botanica Wichita is home to sprawling, lovely gardens like the Woodland Walk, Greenhouse, Martha Parriott Terrace Garden, Peony Collection, and the Shakespeare Garden. Need a place to think?

Movies This Month

Hot Chocolate
